To coincide with today’s Thursday Throwback, I thought it’d be cool to compile the original samples used in this legendary album. LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out brings back a ton of memories for me. Released on September 18, 1990, I had just started my sophomore year in high school. I remember buying the cassette tape as soon as it came out at Tower Records. Along with N.W.A. and some 2 Live Crew, this tape was in constant rotation in my car’s tape deck as my boys and I would cruise the strip in Virginia Beach. That was before they made cruising illegal. Back then we didn’t have the money for high-end stereo equipment, so we wired up as many home stereo subwoofers we could get so that we could feel “The Boomin’ System” in the trunk of my car. Man, what it was like to be 16…
Anyway, enough strolling through memory lane… this album has a ton of great soul and breakbeat samples used extraordinarily by the legendary Marly Marl. Marly Marl produced this whole album, with the exception of the “Jingling Baby” Remix, which LL Cool J produced himself. The album spawned four singles, “The Boomin’ System”, “Around The Way Girl”, “Mama Said Knock You Out”, and “6 Minutes of Pleasure” and was a huge success for LL.
At 28 samples, I had to break this collection into two sets. Rapidshare has been working the best for me lately; Megaupload and MediaFire have been timing out during my upload. So check the link after the tracklist…
