Mama Said Knock You Out: Original Samples

To coincide with today’s Thursday Throwback, I thought it’d be cool to compile the original samples used in this legendary album. LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out brings back a ton of memories for me. Released on September 18, 1990, I had just started my sophomore year in high school. I remember buying the cassette tape as soon as it came out at Tower Records. Along with N.W.A. and some 2 Live Crew, this tape was in constant rotation in my car’s tape deck as my boys and I would cruise the strip in Virginia Beach. That was before they made cruising illegal. Back then we didn’t have the money for high-end stereo equipment, so we wired up as many home stereo subwoofers we could get so that we could feel “The Boomin’ System” in the trunk of my car. Man, what it was like to be 16…

Anyway, enough strolling through memory lane… this album has a ton of great soul and breakbeat samples used extraordinarily by the legendary Marly Marl. Marly Marl produced this whole album, with the exception of the “Jingling Baby” Remix, which LL Cool J produced himself. The album spawned four singles, “The Boomin’ System”, “Around The Way Girl”, “Mama Said Knock You Out”, and “6 Minutes of Pleasure” and was a huge success for LL.

At 28 samples, I had to break this collection into two sets. Rapidshare has been working the best for me lately; Megaupload and MediaFire have been timing out during my upload. So check the link after the tracklist…

Talib Kweli - Eardrum (Original Samples)

Ear Drum: Original Samples

I’ve been sitting on this set for awhile, trying to find the last two tracks needed to complete the compilation. Didn’t have much luck, so I figured I’d put it up in hopes that someone out there has the two missing tracks. I’ve also added the Luther sample for the “Hot Thing Remix”, but does anyone know who produced that? Thanks to JackFrosty, Goon, and Lyndon for helping make this set complete. I’ve recompiled the compilation and all tracks are now included in the download.
Talib Kweli’s Ear Drum was one of my favorite albums last year. Release on August 21, 2007, this album was (and still is) in constant rotation on my ipod without a single skipped track. Production on this album is simply amazing and yet so diverse, as we got tracks from Madlib, Pete Rock, Hi-Tek and Kanye West, among others. I think you’ll enjoy this sample set just as much as the album itself.

  1. “Everything Man” by Day Break
    • Sampled in “Everything Man”
    • Produced by Madlib
  2. “Deliverance” by Space
    • Sampled in “Hostile Gospel Pt. 1 (Deliver Us)”
    • Produced by Just Blaze
  3. “A Theme For L.A.’s Team” by the Thomas Bell Orchestra
    • Sampled in “Say Something”
    • Produced by will.i.am
  4. “Lost on 23rd Street” by Johnny Hammond
    • Sampled in “Country Cousing”
    • Produced by AKidCalledRoots and Sha-La Shakier
  5. “Border Song (Holy Moses)” by Aretha Franklin
    • Sampled in “Holy Moly”
    • Produced by Pete Rock
  6. “Ghetto Lament” by Sylvia Saint James
    • Sampled in “Eat To Live”
    • Produced by Madlib
  7. “Lonesome Mood” by The Friends of Distinction
    • Sampled in “In The Mood”
    • Produced by Kanye West
  8. “Sheba’s Song” by Fruupp
    • Sampled in “Soon The New Day”
    • Produced by Madlib
  9. “I’m Glad You’re Mine” by Al Green
